Thinking about getting some chickens in the yard? Fresh eggs every day, free range sculpture outside your window?

Get ready to experience animal husbandry at its best on gorgeous Kinderhook Farm. Georgia Ranney is known in these parts as the “Chicken Whisperer”. “Our laying hens have just been Animal Welfare Approved, which means that they are cared for with love and respect for their needs as chickens." Animal Welfare Approved is a free, but hard won, certification granted to family farmers adhering to the high animal welfare standards outlined by the non-profit program. Look for that logo to be assured that the animals were raised humanely on pasture or range and allowed to exhibit their natural chicken-ness.

The Ranney's use a combination of mobile coops and movable mesh fenced areas to reduce environmental and pasture impact and improve the soil with their droppings and scratching. Georgia is phenomenally knowledgeable and will teach us about the various breeds and practices that will be most appropriate for your backyard operation, accommodating your needs while raising healthy, happy chickens. The outdoor practical will be followed by an indoor no-fail fresh egg kitchen creations! Everyone will go home with a some fresh, free range eggs.

These workshops are deliberately designed to be low tech and home-scale and emphasize hands-on-learning so that you can easily incorporate these kitchen arts into your daily or weekly routines. All food demonstrations will send you home with lots of information and samples, when possible. Please peruse the entire schedule - you may want to take more than one!

Annual RFFP membership is $50 and will discount all upcoming events and classes. Discounts are offered for farmers, students and seniors of $25, please use the info email to inquire. We are trying to keep these events as affordable as possible without compromising our teaching staff or materials. Classes are kept small and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Any questions, please contact info@farmandfood.org.

Let's have some fun!
